Louis and Mary Leakey had researched the Olduvai Gorge for years but in 1959, Mary received international attention when she uncovered Zinjanthropus bosie, a discovery that provided conclusive audience of ancient human existence. Tourists may visit the dig sites when accompanied by a resident guide. An on-site Museum offers an informative commentary on the history and research of the area.
