With desert-like conditions most of the year, the crumbling
walls of olduvai gorge are the site of world renowned fossil discoveries
that have enhanced the understanding of human origin and ancestry.
Louis and Mary Leakey had researched the
Olduvai Gorge for years but in 1959, Mary received international attention
when she uncovered Zinjanthropus bosie, a discovery that provided conclusive
audience of ancient human existence. Tourists may visit the dig sites when
accompanied by a resident guide. An on-site Museum offers an informative
commentary on the history and research of the area.
